Dubliners James Joyce Books
James Joyce is not always easy to read. His stories in The Dubliners are--for the most part--simple tales about not so simple people and events. He has no deep hidden meanings in these stories, but they are rich with human foibles, contradictions, hardness and softness, and wonder. To be short, his characters are three dimensional and very real to me. I am able not only to get inside of them, I also see and hear them as they think and speak. We have not seen a new Joyce in my lifetime of reading literature.

Dubliners James Joyce Books Reviews
This is James Joyce at his finest. The stories seem more "real" after a trip to Dublin. Now I need to read Ulysses to learn about the lemon soap sold at Sweney's.
First of all, this version actually was not illustrated at all, at least, I never saw any illustrations appear on my Paperwhite. Secondly, my apologies to Joyce fans, but I found these stories dull. The problem wasn't the indeterminate endings - that I can handle - it was that I couldn't summon much care for the characters because they were drawn rather flat. I am someone who might cry or laugh out loud when a writer moves me - I cry in movies, etc, too. Did you see the movie "Wild"? I cried like a baby and then cried some more. But I digress.... I'm sure Joyce's writing was considered a breakthrough of some sort when it was published, and the fact that it was banned in Dublin is intriguing to people. It isn't very controversial or even interesting at this point, however. Blah.
Having just been to Dublin I was intrigued to find out about this classic author. I am now going to read Ulysses having learned to read the Dubliners first

This book by a master of literature will bury you in the world it creates. It contains the flavour and truth of the socially constructed culture of Ireland at that time. It is rich in description . If you have any interest in Ireland past and its influence on the present this is a must read.
Easy way to get into Joyce -- a sort of primer.
A true classic, but references made in passing challenge complete understanding. The book was part of a seniors college class taught be a retired English teacher who has been to Ireland many times.
